Rather than a best of, mine is going to be more a snapshot of my life with some best of mixed in.  Organized vaguely into categories:<\/p>\n<h2>Work<\/h2>\n<p>I changed jobs in May, moving to <a href=http:\/\/www.appliedstrategies.com\/>Applied Strategies<\/a> as the <a href=http:\/\/www.appliedstrategies.com\/technology\/nehrlich.html>&#8220;Associate Director, Technical Solutions&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biggest professional moment:<\/strong><br \/>\nHaving the <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/11\/10\/cellkey-prototype\/>instrument I worked on for four years at two companies<\/a> actually be released.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/16\/what-should-i-do-with-my-life-by-po-bronson\/>Career paths considered<\/a>: <\/strong><br \/>\nSoftware engineer, data analyst, project manager, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/16\/what-should-i-do-with-my-life-by-po-bronson\/#comments>&#8220;Techno-cultural translator&#8221;<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/nehrlich\/33809.html?thread=43793#t43793>writer<\/a>, blogger, <A href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/02\/07\/punditocracy-and-other-notes\/>pundit<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/09\/27\/designing-for-the-collective\/>designer for the collective<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/23\/4s-conference-and-la\/>social science grad student<\/a>, <A href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/18\/latour-at-berkeley\/>philosopher<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Personal<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Where I went in 2005:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/category\/journal\/events\/nyc\/>Three weeks in New York in March<\/a>\n<li>Memorial Day weekend in Boston for a wedding\n<li><a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/31\/portland\/>A weekend in July in Portland<\/a>\n<li>A week in Paris in August\n<li><a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/23\/4s-conference-and-la\/>A weekend in October in Los Angeles for the 4S conference<\/a>\n<li>Two days in DC for work in December\n<li>Visiting my parents near Seattle for Christmas\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Non-local person with whom I hung out the most:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.jofish.com>Jofish<\/a>, who I hung out with four times in four cities in seven months (<a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/28\/henry-rollins-and-cornell-march-24-28\/>Ithaca in March<\/a>, Oakland in June, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/31\/portland\/>Portland in July<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/23\/4s-conference-and-la\/>LA in October<\/a>).  It doesn&#8217;t quite match the streak I had in 2000-2001, where I hung out with Batman five times in five cities in seven months, but it&#8217;s not bad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most expensive meal:<\/strong><br \/>\n<A href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/20\/michael-mina\/>Michael Mina<\/a>.  Alas, not as good as <A href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2004\/07\/24\/the-french-laundry\/>the French Laundry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best concert I was part of:<\/strong><br \/>\nNone of the concerts I did with <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/chorus\/index.html>the chorus<\/a> this year were too memorable.  Probably the most enjoyable was <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/chorus\/2005-2006season.html#messiah>this fall&#8217;s Messiah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sport I enjoy playing:<\/strong><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s still <A href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/category\/journal\/ultimate\/>ultimate frisbee<\/a>, especially with the <a href=http:\/\/www.sful.org>San Francisco Ultimate League<\/a>.  Good group of people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sport I enjoy watching:<\/strong><br \/>\nPro football.  Especially when Da Bears are playing well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best new (to me) group of people: <\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/12\/06\/brainjamming\/>BrainJammers<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Media<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/category\/reviews\/books\/>Books<\/a> that changed how I think:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/05\/09\/politics-of-nature-part-2\/>The Politics of Nature<\/a> by Bruno Latour, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/09\/25\/where-the-action-is-by-paul-dourish\/>Where the Action Is<\/a> by Paul Dourish, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/29\/finite-and-infinite-games-by-james-carse\/>Finite and Infinite Games<\/a> by James Carse, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/01\/16\/sources-of-power-by-gary-klein\/>Sources of Power<\/a> by Gary Klein<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/category\/reviews\/books\/fiction\/>Fiction books<\/a> that I liked this year:<\/strong><br \/>\nUm, none that I can think of.  I don&#8217;t read much fiction, and most of what I do read is forgettable fluff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magazines I read:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <A href=http:\/\/www.economist.com>The Economist<\/A>.  Every week.  It&#8217;s a lot of reading.\n<li> <a href=http:\/\/www.sciencenews.org>Science News<\/a>.  I generally fall several weeks behind on this, and then take a bunch of issues on vacation or on BART or something and catch up.\n<li> <a href=http:\/\/www.cooksillustrated.com\/>Cooks Illustrated<\/a>.  For inspiration.\n<li> <A href=http:\/\/ambidextrousmag.org\/>Ambidextrous<\/a>.  Yay design.\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TV shows I make sure to see:<\/strong><br \/>\nGilmore Girls, How I Met Your Mother, Battlestar Galactica, The Shield<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV shows I watch when I have time:<\/strong><br \/>\nBones, Veronica Mars, Alias<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV shows I enjoyed watching on DVD:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/07\/wonderfalls\/>Wonderfalls<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/02\/24\/firefly\/>Firefly<\/a>, Season 1 of The Wire<\/p>\n<p><strong>Movie I liked most this year:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/02\/serenity\/>Serenity<\/a>.   Unsurprising.  I saw it twice in the theater, and have watched it a couple more times on DVD.  I actually find it more rewatchable than the <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/02\/24\/firefly\/>Firefly series<\/a>.  Not sure why that is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other movies I watched this year:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen I was debating whether Serenity was my favorite movie of 2005, I realized I was unable to actually remember what other movies I&#8217;d seen.  So I went back and looked at <a href=http:\/\/www.the-numbers.com\/movies\/index2005.html>every movie released in 2005<\/a>, just to see what I&#8217;d seen in the theaters.  The list, in approximate order of my enjoyment quotient:<br \/>\nSerenity, Kung Fu Hustle, <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/05\/03\/hitchhikers-guide-to-the-galaxy\/>Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide to the Galaxy<\/a>, Sin City, Batman Begins, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Star Wars Episode III, The Island, Harry Potter 4, Wedding Crashers, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sky High<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best new (to me) blog: <\/strong><br \/>\n<A href=http:\/\/headrush.typepad.com\/creating_passionate_users\/>Creating Passionate Users<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best new (to me) software:<\/strong><br \/>\n<A href=http:\/\/wordpress.org\/>WordPress<\/a>.  It was not nearly as painful as expected to <a href=http:\/\/www.nehrlich.com\/blog\/2005\/04\/10\/new-blog-software\/>transfer my blog<\/a> into WordPress, and it gave me tons more options in my blogging, from comments, to updating over the web, to backing up more reliably.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Websites I visit way too much:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/nehrlich\/friends>LiveJournal<\/a>, <A href=http:\/\/www.bloglines.com\/myblogs>Bloglines<\/a>, <A href=http:\/\/espn.go.com\/>ESPN.com<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/>SI.com<\/a>, <A href=http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/index\/sports.html>Chicago Sun Times sports<\/a>, <A href=http:\/\/chicagosports.chicagotribune.com\/>Chicago Tribune sports<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/movie-reviews.colossus.net\/main0.html>James Berardinelli&#8217;s Movie Reviews<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite webcomic:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.questionablecontent.net\/>Questionable Content<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite sports columnist:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/espn\/page2\/simmons\/index>Sports Guy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Okay, I&#8217;ll shut up now.
