Sonia's Peace Corps Experience

Chuuk, Micronesia

I'm putting my new Masters of Public Health degree from the University of California at Berkeley to use in the Peace Corps.  I've served in the Federated States of Micronesia for over a year and am now one of the old-timers since the 2002 recruits have arrived.  FSM is a large group of islands in the south Pacific spread over 1700 miles and with a total land mass only about the size of Rhode Island.

The first year was exciting, but also frustrating. Time moves slowly here and even promising projects get delayed repeatedly. However, since the Spring of 2002, more progress is being made in implementing some of our proposals. I have been involved in a lot of educational and survey projects including vitamin A usage, diabetus, and Aids awareness.  As part of these projects I've made several trips to the outer islands - some by boat and others by small plane.
